Intern with Friends of the Mississippi River
For the long-term health of the Mississippi River, we know we need to meet the challenges of the day while also stewarding the next generation of environmental leaders and professionals.
We also understand how tough it is to break into this highly competitive and sometimes exclusive field. We believe everyone can be an environmentalist.
To this end, FMR strives to offer internships and other pathways to support the next generation of environmental leaders and professionals and make our field more inclusive.
Internships
Visit our openings page for any current opportunities. Most of our internship offerings are intended for young adults ages 18-21, college and graduate school students. Check out examples and highlights from previous internships. (If you're interested in an internship and you're in high school, please check out FMR's Environmental Stewardship Institute.)
Volunteering
Many volunteers have shared with us that noting participation in FMR habitat restoration and other hands-on stewardship events on their resume or cover letter has helped them break into the field. Some have also worked with FMR to write about and share photos of events with local newspapers to build portfolios.
Events and volunteer opportunities are listed on our calendar and announced in our twice-monthly e-newsletter Mississippi Messages.
For high schoolers
FMR created the Environmental Stewardship Institute (ESI) in 2019 to address the gap between environmental education and a career path in the environmental field.
ESI provides a paid job experience and foundational learning to a group of students, our ESI fellows, curious about environmental career paths. Openings for the summer fellowships and fall council are typically announced on the main ESI page.
